Europe On the 1st of August 2024 the EU AI Act officially came into force.

On the 12th of July, 2024, the EU AI Act, Regulation 2024/1689 was published in the EU official journal. This established the first comprehensive horizontal legal framework for the regulation of AI within the EU.

Canada In June 2022, the Government of Canada tabled the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act ,AIDA, as part of the C-27, the Digital charter implementation act 2022.

The Government intends to build on this framework through an open and transparent regulatory development process.

The United Kingdom In March 2023, the UK Government published its AI Regulation White paper setting out its pro-innovation approach to AI Regulation. This set out 5 principles for regulators to interpret and apply.

In June 2023 the UK published initial guidance on generative AI. The Generative AI framework is intended to be an incomplete document which can be added to as the technology in this area develops.

In February 2024, the UK Government published a policy paper which provided guidance to regulators on actions they can take to implement the White Paper.

On the 13th of January 2025, the Government published its AI Action Plan, alongside this the y also published their response to the report outlining their projected next steps.

China On July 20th 2017, the Chinese government set out its vision for the development of AI in China when it published its Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan.

On the 1st of October 2020 Chinas first provincial law on the development of AI took effect.


On July 13th 2023, the Provisional Administrative measures on Generative Artificial Intelligence Services was published by the Chinese Government.

On the 15th of August 2023 the rules officially came into force.

Australia In 2019 the Australian federal Government announced its voluntary AI ethics framework to guide the responsible development of AI.

In 2021 the Australian Government issues its AI Action Plan

In June 2023, the Australian Government held a public consultation on the "Safe and responsible AI in Australia." This consultation paper set out the methods Australia should take to ensure the safety of AI.

On the 17th of January 2024, the Australian Government released it's interim response to the 2023 consultation paper, "Safe and responsible AI in Australia",

In 2024, the Australian Government issued its AI Safety Standard which builds upon the previous consultation paper, "Safe and responsible AI"

There is currently no applicable law regulating the use of AI. However, the Australian Government has issued guidance.
The United States of America On October 30th 2023, the Biden administration issued an executive order on safe, secure and trustworthy development and use of AI. (E.O.) 14110. This Executive Order directs 50 federal entities to engage in 50 specific actions to implement guidance.

Russia On the 1st of July 2020, Russia introduced a new "AI law" This established a legal framework for the development of AI technology for a period of 5 years.
Ending on the 1st of July 2025.

On October 26th 2021, a Russian Code of Ethics was signed by 7 organisations. "Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: The beginning of a trust"

This Code of Ethics has become part of the Artificial Intelligence federal project and the Strategy for the Development of the Information Society for 2017-2030.

France There is currently no regulatory framework on AI. However, as an EU member the EU AI act will have direct effect in France.
Despite this, France will likely publish guidance on a sector-specific basis.
In 2017, France published its "National AI Strategy."

Germany In November 2018, the German Federal Government launched its "National AI strategy"

In November 2019, the German Federal Government then published an interim report which outlined which measures have been implemented following the National AI strategy.

In December 2020, the German Federal Government then published an updated AI strategy. This set out concrete measures to be implemented by 2022.

As Germany is a member of the EU, the EU AI Act, 2024, has direct effect.

Switzerland There are currently no regulations of AI in Switzerland.
On the 22nd November 2023, the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications were instructed to prepare a report on the possible regulations of AI.
This is expected to be released towards the end of 2024.
IndiaThere are currently no laws regulating AI in India. However committee's have been developed to promote AI and develop a policy framework.

In 2018, the Indian Government released the AI strategy.

In 2021 the Principles of Responsible AI were released.

In March 2024, the National AI Mission was approved by cabinet.

In 2023, MEITY's AI report outlines 7 pillars for strategic development.

IndonesiaIn August 2020, Indonesia published its National AI strategy (Stratnas AI)

Argentina On the 28th of April 2023, Argentina released its National Artificial Intelligence Plan.

On June 1st 2023 Argentina released "Recommendations for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence” under Disposition No. 2/2023"

In 2019, Argentina also developed guidelines to encourage the use of AI in public sectors.

In 2021, Argentina also signed UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.

In August 2024, Argentina began debating legislation to regulate AI.
